How to make the most of open plan living

Open plan living is most certainly the new way to live. New builds are embracing it, older builds are being remodeled to include it and it’s top of the property wish-list. A open plan living space is perfect for those families, social butterflies and those who love the idea of wall-less living. It creates unlimited space, and one that can chop, change and house everything and anything you want. It’s somewhere everyone can come together without anyone being left behind.

In a world where children can spend hours playing computer games, and adults slaving over a hob, a open space allows everyone to be together, even when everyone is just doing their own thing.

But how do you really make the most out of wall-less spaces? How do you make open plan living work in the usual, maybe even small UK home?

Having had a open plan Kitchen, dining, living space, I share some top tips to create the perfect open living space.

Invisible Zones

Even in open spaces, having ‘zones’ helps divide the space and utalise it as much as possible. This is really important when creating a useful yet flowing open plan living space. The zones don’t have to be visible, but defined by furniture and style. Using a sofa or a counter top as a ‘wall’ between your living space and dining area is a popular way to divide the space whilst keeping it open and spacious.

When thinking of the entire space as individual zones can help break down the space to decorate, furnish and style. This is highly recommend when struggling to dress you open plan living space.

Tip : Use rugs to create visually pleasing ‘zones’ if wanting a true divide.

Adaptive furniture

Open plan living lends well to versatile furniture that can chop and change depending on what you’re using the space for. Like dining tables that can extend or coffee tables that turn into a desk. With every piece that you include in your open space, consider how it can be used for different occasions and uses.

Coordinating colour scheme

When it comes to decorating your open space, consider it as one, cohesive room. Make sure each zone carries something of the same colour scheme, palette or material. This is so important when creating that flowing, stylish space. This doesn’t mean you can’t create a different mood for your living area or dining zone. Instead, just adopt other colours, tones and finishes that work with that underlying, recurrent decor.

Embrace light

As with any space, embracing natural light and implementing more when needed is really important to creating a balanced space. Ensure natural light is being maximized with mirrors and reflective surfaces. Inject moody or soft lighting with lamps, standing lights and dimmer switches.

Open living spaces are a modern example of utilizing space and being versatile with your home. Whether it be a socializing space, a family area or cosy all in one spot, open plan living is a well invested floorplan staple for modern living.

2019 Christmas Decoration Trends

As we stare at 4 weeks till Christmas day *gulp*, now is about the right time to consider putting up your Christmas decorations. I’m not sorry to say that any earlier and well, it’s just ridiculous.

As with every year, we have a new flurry of decorations and trends to consider. And if you’re anything like me, I do love to add, alter and sometimes completely make over my Christmas tree and home deccys.

But what trends are worth the complete overhaul? What will tip your home into modern Christmas living this year?

Well, I have all the trends to consider, whatever decor your home includes.

Grey

It’s no surprise that even in the midst of Christmas, Grey is stilling pulling out on top. And thanks to the huge love for Grey, this year has lots to offer to create a gorgeous grey Christmas.

It doesn’t have to be bleak though, breaking it up with white and silver accents to create a stunning colour scheme fit for Mrs Hinch’s abode.

Woodland Creatures – Natural

There’s no denying EVERY decoration aisle seems to carry this super adorable, cute and pretty easy trend this year. Whether you opt for the dainty creatures to adorn your tree, or take the more natural but rustic approach, this tree trend is a gorgeous one to consider this Christmas.

Traditional – Red, Gold & Green

This is no way a ‘new’ trend, just much rather the traditional type that you may want to consider this year if you don’t already. I LOVE this traditional approach and its bound to suit any home, any taste, any Chritsmas. With glorious deep reds, rich greens and vibrant golds, this is a theme that will offer depth and the ultimate festive feel.

Midnight Blue, Gold & White.

The new kid on the block has to be the midnight Blue effect. I LOVE the combination of classic gold with deep, pure blue. With plenty of highstreet and online store adapting the gorgeous colour, there are plenty of decorations to grab if you want to have this trend yourself.

If you don’t want tooo much blue, it would make a lovely accent to white and silver decorations.

Soft and Fluffy

This certainly a trend we will see all across Instagram this year and for good reason. Cute, fluffy and almost snow like, this trend is one to consider if wanting a more cosy Christmas.

If I could be adopting any trend this year I would love to have a truly fluffy, magical tree.

Gold on Gold

Feel like keeping it classic and neutral? Do it GOLD Style. There is nothing more classic than gold trees and if you’re not dead set on what accompanying colour to incirporate, don’t bother. These gorgeous decorations are enough on their own and will create a stunning simple gold tree.

There are so many stunning decorations and trends to be had this festive season, that believe it or not, this small selection is just that, a small selection.

What will you be decorating your tree like this Christmas? What trend have you fallen in love with? As always share your thoughts below.

SS19 Interior Trends – What to look out for & incorporate to your home

Spring, for most of us, is the time of year we all fancy a home shake up. Tidy the home, move things around, even take on small or big, home DIYs we have been mulling over since Winter began. Yes, Spring is the time many of us tackle our home and make improvements. And perfectly so. I do like to transform my colour palette just a little to make way for the sunnier, brighter and warmer tones that come with Spring Summer.

But what’s on trend this year? Here’s some of the interior trends you should look out for and use through your home.

Sustainability – Less is more

It’s never been more on trend than to be sustainable. With many of us being more conscious of our impact on the environment through the items we buy. Whether it be our food choice, clothes purchases and even our home upgrades. This season, well this year, will see a huge surge in homeowners being more conscious with the spaces they are creating and the items they purchase to create the perfect space.

Less is defiantly more, and with minimal colour and multiple tonnes, sustainability is certainly a trend you want to sport this season.

Here’s some sub categories falling under sustainability you should consider when upgrading your home decor.

Serine Scandi

This is an updated look with lots of emphasis on texture and pattern. This the perfect styled back look that can create a space oozing with effortless style and truly inviting. If you are looking for a serine space with relaxation the key, this is just the style you want to nab this season.

Consider creating your own texture through the use of homemade cushion covers and recycled textures. Don’t be shy to embrace natural wood neither because……

Room for Wellbeing

All Natural – Light wood is back!

Yes, you heard right, light natural wood is on the comeback and that’s thanks to many of us wanting to create that open, airy and bright space similar to sustainable homes.

Ash, bleached wood is a great material to incorporate into your home this season.

Modern country style

This isn’t the first year this style has been back around, yet this year does seem the turning point. With retailers like Neptune and Next all offering stunning ranges of Modern Country, it’s the perfect style to incorporate in any home needing a refresh and one that is timeless.

I love modern country pieces. Painted cladding is a perfect alternative if wanting to add some character into your room, and looks stunning in dining areas and bedrooms.

Other modern style accents include the following….

Floral Prints

Its never been more modern nor timeless to decorate with floral prints. Keep it subtle with pops of floral patterns on cushions and soft furnishings. Prints in slimline frames is another great way to inject some floral fusion without being too empowering.

Painted Wood

Painted wood furniture is bang on trend and suitable for any home and space needing some timeless furniture. If you’re looking to upgrade your tatty or cheap pieces and want something that will last nor age, painted wood furniture is just your style.

High street stores like Next , Neptune home and Dunelm offer stunning pieces suitable to any budget. The best part of painted wood? You can look to alter the colour years down the line by painting yourself.

This is a trend we all need to embrace, especially for Spring / Summer. We’ve seen a huge increase in palm leaf prints and tropical injections of colour over the last year or two. This year it’s been toned down, and I’m all here for it.

The gorgeous fusion of subtle colours, leafy prints and softer hues make this a stunning look to incorporate this season. You could even inject this look into your patio area of conservatory for a updated spark of summer.

These are just some of the trends that you should consider for your home this Spring / Summer. As you can see, just sprucing up some cushions to a more on trend colour or pattern, or investing in furniture pieces that will withstand any change in trend is just what you may need this summer for your home.

What trends are you interested in? Are you investing in your home this spring / summer? As always, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Grabbing the perfect decorations – Shop this post

December starts THIS weekend…..can you believe it?! As Saturday is the start of December, many of us will be whacking our Christmas trees up and really getting into the festive spirit…..right?

The Christmas advent calendars will be started, and the Christmas tunes will undoubtedly blasting. If not already started, Christmas shopping will well and truly be underway.

Some of us like to add, change or completely overhaul our decorations every year and I am no exception. For the last couple of years, our tree has had the same theme and this year I am eager to add a bit more to my tree.

There are soooo many gorgeous Christmas deccys to grab online, so here are some stunning pieces that you can grab before Christmas decorations start this weekend!

A Tree

This year maybe the year that you grab yourself a new tree. Failing that, a real one! We have always had an artificial one since we have been blessed with tall ceilings and a rather large space, we have no worry on how tall of a tree we can fit. If you are on the hunt for a new one this year, here are some that I gathered from across the web!

For your tree

I loveeee buying for my Christmas Tree. This year I am in dire need of more baubles, with a bit more colour per se. I do love having ornaments on my tree, so again, I am in need for some of those! I’m thinking of adding Crimson Red and Dark green into my usually just Gold and Brown tree. I think it’s great to spruce and update Christmas deccy’s, especially when some stores launch sales and discounts.

I’ve scoured the web, hunted the stores and found a gorgeous collection of stunning ornaments, baubles and general decorations you should be hanging on your Christmas tree this year!

Under the tree

Ayy, those presents need something to rest on. The bottom of your tree needs to look just as good as the rest! Tree skirts are great for sprucing up the bottom and hiding those light cables! Plus, they make your tree look pretty even without the prezzies! Here are some of my favs I’ve found!

Home Ornaments

There is nothing better than carrying the festivities across your home. The decorating doesn’t have to stop at the tree, and neither does it have to be tacky or over the top. There are so many gorgeous pieces that are cute and subtle for the Christmas period. Here are some that will have pride of place in any home!

For the table

Christmas is not complete unless you have a dining table to beam festivity. Table garlands, classic table cloths and even baubles. The table is the centre of Christmas, so dress yours for the occasion with some of these gorgeous pieces.

Foliage

The Green doesn’t stop at the tree. There is so much foliage to be had throughout your home this Christmas. Gorgeous wreaths, garlands and sprigs of holly are perfect to line your home. Catch a load of these which I managed to find.

Stockings

Of course, you need a stocking to stuff all those small prezzies in, so you better get shopping for the best one! We managed to knab ours this year on our local TKMax but damn, there are some pretty cute ones bouncing round the web!

Soft Furnishings

Yup, Christmas cushions are a thing, and so are blankets. Tis the season to wrap up, so here’s a loadddd of cushions to purchase to make your sofa sing Christmas too!

Lights

Christmas is all about cosy vibes, and warm lighting. So, finding the perfect set of lights is vital to make a grotto in your living room. There are stunning pieces to be found, and once again, they don’t have to be tacky. Here’s some pieces that would look great and classy in any home.

Alright, that’s it. The complete guide to get your home, and tree ready for the start of December this weekend. Yes, I will be popping mine up and yes, you are sure to see snaps and stories over on the gram.

How you can get a new look in your home for half the price!

We all want to be updating our home with new styles and trends, or just a new lease of life. But whilst you might think this means forking out a shed load of money, there are ways to update the look of your home, without that hefty price tag.

All you’ll need is a little creativity, a open mind and a touch of patience and you could pick up some real bargains that could become staples in your home.

Head to charity shops & second hand furniture stores.

Recycling, upcycling and making use of others trash is in high demand. So why not get involved yourself and head to charity shops and second hand furniture stores. So much can be found from coffee tables, bookcases and more. They are often an Aladins cave of furniture.

Old, unloved, pre-owned items like these can add so much character into your home, with a sense of history. What’s better, they often come at a fraction of the cost you may spend in the likes of Ikea!

Keep an eye on your Facebook selling groups

Another mans trash is another mans treasure, literally. Who knew the likes of Facebook could be a hub to find furniture and home decor treasure? With so many things that can be found locally and with many using facebook to flog it, its super easy to nab them when they come up.

You can even create notifications for posts that contain a keyword, like a sofa, table or tv.

Or Try Ebay

Yep, despite facebook market place being ever popular, Ebay is still a fantastic source of pre-loved furniture pieces. What’s better, there’s often wiggle room to negotiate or bid for a super cheap steal!

IKEA

If you’re not really one for up-cycling, or you want a fresher look that second-hand furniture won’t give you, there is no better place to shop than IKEA. Their range is superb and their prices are rock bottom. They’re the best for all furniture as well as anything else you might need. Artificial plants, candles, and pictures are always a good buy.

Upcycle what you already have

With the changes of colour schemes, your previous pieces may now look out of place. But instead of replacing, upcycling what you do have is super cheap and resourceful too! Consider painting, stripping and even modifying your furniture pieces to suit your new style.

I love Frenchic paint – makes it super easy to literally change the colour of any furniture pieces – including Ikea malm!

When it comes to updating your home, it can feel like a constant expenditure. But that really doesn’t have to be the case. Sell you unwanted items to fund new pieces, and never be scared to try your hand at up cycling and updating current pieces, old or new.
